Now these are really not to be missed. You get there on a ridiculous little train that goes on roads and crosses the Roman bridge to the springs. The journey takes 30 minutes and costs 80 cents. It feels rather dangerous. If you have a swimming costume that is ideal. I couldn't get one on a Sunday in Ourense. But the river is great; cool but with hot bits where the springs flow in. And there are hot rocks to dry out and warm up on. I have spent a blissful few hours here. The thermal springs are really hot! I put my poor hot feet on one when I got here and it felt like torture!
The albergue is great - a superb old building at the top of town, clean and professional.
I think I must try some pulpo (octopus) tonight as Ourense is famous for it. Then another early start tomorrow to get to the monastery at Oseira.
South America is really big and I have never been there. I am leaving the safety of my teaching job to explore 5 spanish-speaking countries and to walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin on the Galapagos Islands. I am hoping that neither the perilous altitudes of Ecuador, the ravenous midges in the Peruvian rainforest or the crazy Bolivian bus drivers will kill me... I will doubtless meet other people on the edge of sanity who feel the need to wander away from safety. I hope we can be friends.
