South America is really big and I have never been there. I am leaving the safety of my teaching job to explore 5 spanish-speaking countries and to walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin on the Galapagos Islands. I am hoping that neither the perilous altitudes of Ecuador, the ravenous midges in the Peruvian rainforest or the crazy Bolivian bus drivers will kill me... I will doubtless meet other people on the edge of sanity who feel the need to wander away from safety. I hope we can be friends.

14 August
Well it has been a hard walk to get the Castro Dozon which has a bar and coffee but nothing savoury to eat at all. I was really hoping for scrambled eggs on toast and have had to make do with a chocolate muffin full of preservatives. Now marmite on toast would really hit the spot!
This is going to be my last long-ish walk for a few days (i hope) and I think my knee really needs a rest. I woke in the night and it was so sore I thought I might have to make a different plan today. However this morning it was willing again (like Barkis if you know your Dickens!)
Apart from the knee though I slept like a baby in the monastery. What a fabulous place. I will say more about my time in Oseira tonight from Silleda when I have Wi-Fi.
The weather today reminds me of Ireland; wet cloud with no malice. The countryside is gentle and agricultural. I have 38 km total today so won't be hanging around which is a god thing as there isn't anywhere much to hang! This part of the route does not feel very old or spiritual so far...
