South America is really big and I have never been there. I am leaving the safety of my teaching job to explore 5 spanish-speaking countries and to walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin on the Galapagos Islands. I am hoping that neither the perilous altitudes of Ecuador, the ravenous midges in the Peruvian rainforest or the crazy Bolivian bus drivers will kill me... I will doubtless meet other people on the edge of sanity who feel the need to wander away from safety. I hope we can be friends.

Silleda
Hurrah I have arrived! I have met loads of pilgrims today and I was told by a Portugese family that pilgrims are supposed to bang their heads on the door of this church near Silleda. I'm not sure why but I thought I'd have a go, and I rang the bells too for extra good luck.
I have walked 38 km since 5.30 this morning, but my feet are more sire than my knee. But this would have been impossible if it had been hotter. Not that I really enjoyed the, rain though, and I have had wet feet since 6 this morning.
On the bright side it has kept them cool...
Now to check into the private albergue called 'Albergue Turistico Sillena', costing Euro 8 and with a private room I hope, ans get clean.
